Sliding Glass Patio
Door Replacement
Sliding glass patio doors have long been an item that homebuilders have used to flood a room with light, while not having to invest a great deal of money from the window and door budget. These sliding doors also allowed easy access to a patio or dining area without the problems a swinging door can cause when it bumps into furniture or requires a person to step around it to get to the table or chairs in the room.
Unfortunately, most of the early patio doors were not very efficient at all. The panels did not seal well when shut and the glass had very poor energy performance.
Thankfully today’s vinyl framed sliding doors allow a great deal of natural light to enter your home, while providing energy efficiency similar to the latest high efficiency windows.
Most of them come with a sliding screen as well. Vinyl frame colors are available in white, almond or tan. Locks on sliding doors run the range from basic, to elaborate multipoint locking systems. All the door glass is now high efficiency “Low E” glass which reflects most of the direct heat from the sun back outside before it can enter your home. Argon gas is typically included inside the dead air space between the glass, to further enhance efficiency while reducing outside sound levels.
All patio and entry doors for homes automatically include tempered safety glass, as required by federal law since the year 1974. Typical tempered safety glass is about 4 times stronger than ordinary glass and if it gets broken, the glass breaks away into thousands of relatively harmless small pieces, rather than into large shards of glass, which could be very dangerous.
